So I have noticed that Google refers lots of people to my blog for “Fly Out Menus”. I imagine many of you are disappointed when you find that the article is for enabling the fly out only on the top of the page also known as the Top Nav and is not an article regarding the left hand side Current Navigation or Quick Launch, if this is, indeed, your intention then refer to this article: Quick Launch Fly-Out Menus. However, if you are simply attempting to display the quick launch menus across the top of your page in the so-called Global Navigation then you are in luck, read further.
To enable fly out menus on the top of SharePoint 2010 sites you simply have to enable the publishing feature. Unfortunately, for SharePoint’s Global Navigation the fly out version are tied to the publishing feature and can’t be easily manipulated using SharePoint Designer so there is no easy programmatic solution.
As always, test this in your lab, the publishing feature makes many changes to your site including creating multiple lists and libraries to support itself. Note that If you can enable the publishing infrastructure and the publishing feature, the fly out menus will appear and the Navigation settings (along with many other items in site settings) will appear.
To enable the publishing infrastructure visit the site collection where your site resides and click on “Site Collection Features”. In the Site Collection Features page enable
